First Week of Term

September 23, 2008 at 12:05 am (Uncategorized)

So far Hogwarts is not as bad as I feared it would be.

Elenor has joined me for Potions and Herbology.  The first day of classes one of the Slytherins took me to each of my classes.  It is very kind. Elenor sat by me for lunch and then when I got ready to leave for Potions she jumped up and said she would walk with me.  To say I was nervous was a bit of an understatement.

Papa had told me to give her a second chance and so far she has only been kind. She is a bit odd though.  There is a Ravenclaw student who is inexplicably turning green all week.  Everytime Elenor sees her she breaks into giggles.  It is just a trifle disconcerting.

This changing of colors seems to be a Hogwarts tradition of some sort.  A rather astonishing number of the first year students are turning a surprising color of yellow and growing feathers. Madame Maxime would never have tolerated this.  Legends of her tempers are enough to keep even the most mischievious student from such behavior.  Madame is quite different from Msr. Dumbledore he seems rather kind and tolerant, if a bit sadistic with the students.

Yesterday the Potions room was literally drifted with yellow feathers and Prof. Snape was simply puce with anger.  Needless to say class was dreary and even though the potion Elenor and I made was perfect he awarded us a barely passing score.

I did not bother to point out that there is a better, easier and more reliable recipe for this potion, although I did mention it to Elenor.  She does seem to love potions.  I hope she won’t think me too forward if I have Papa send me some of my old books and translate them for her.   She seems to get a bit testy when I make suggestions about things that I learned at my old school.  I really am only trying to be useful.

Papa had sent me a box of sweets and I shared them with her after herbology today. They are Belgian chocolates from my Aunt Liliane.  She is having an affaire de Coeur with a lovely confectionere in Brussels.

Oh – and I received a passing score on my Care of Magical Creatures exam.  Msr. Hagrid was quite enthusiastic when he saw my dragons.  Scared my quite to death. I am sure my heart stopped in my chest.  He gave me a rather large cup of tea and talked to me at great length about Mme.’s flying horses.

Next weekend Elenor and I may go to Hogsmeade.

Papa informs me that we have been invited to the Malfoy’s for the holiday celebrations.  They are always simpering at me when I am here to see Papa.  I simply dread the thought of it.  Mme. Malfoy goes on and on about my fine continental manners and such.  It is rather sickening, really.  I really must find a way to spend the term here in the Library.  Perhaps I can talk one of the teachers into a special project which will require my remaining at Hogwarts?

Still no word from Manon,  I am afraid she has forgotten all about me.  Out of sight out of mind, as Maman would say.

House Party

September 15, 2008 at 3:17 am (Uncategorized)

Tonight I went to a pre-term party in the common room.  It was quite nice.  I didn’t speak much, mostly listened.  Everyone seems nice enough.

Mlle Elanor was there – she tells me she didn’t know the candy would give me a blue rash.  I do not know whether to believe her or not.  I will talk to Papa.  He is wise and will give me good advice.

I want to go home to Beaux Batons.  I miss du vin et des gateaux.  I would give much to have a nice petit pain ou croque monsiuer. I think tonight I will sneak out of the house and find some place quiet.  One can not be sad with so many people about.  Somethings should be private and I will not have them making fun of me for my homesickness.  It is already hard enough, without false sympathy from people I do not know.

I sent an Owl to Manon, I wait for her response – but it will be some time before the owl will get back, assuming Madame has allowed her enough free time to write.  I do not miss Madam’s homework assignments.

More Homework

September 14, 2008 at 1:11 pm (Uncategorized)

Teachers always pile on the homework in the start of term.  I suppose because they assume we are all fresh from vacation.

  1. Potter name: Violette Black
  2. Rav ID: knitknot
  3. I am allergic to: tobacco smoke and some perfumes
  4. Pets that I have: two cats and a bird.
  5. My favorite yarn: currently – shetland jumper weight
  6. If you are a Ravenclaw, do you prefer the film colors or the book colors?
  7. My favorite flavor: blackberry
  8. My favorite holiday: Halloween
  9. I would like to receive a: (Sock kit, scarf kit or yarn dyeing kit) sock – but if my spoiler has a great idea for something else – I’m happy with that
  10. List your favorite brand of needles or hooks, including size and length: options or Brittany. I really don’t need more needles.  I have at least three or four sets of each size I commonly use.
  11. Is there a brand that you are dying to try?: I wouldn’t mind a set of Lantern Moons – but they are TOO expensive – which is why I don’t have any.
  12. I’ve participated in HSKS: (How many times have you participated in HSKS swaps?) I believe I have participated in 2, 4 and 6. But it could have been 3, 4 and 6.
  13. Do you have a birthday during this swap? If so which day? Nope But Elanor does!

Finally feeling better

September 14, 2008 at 1:02 pm (Uncategorized)

Allo,

I may have to rethink the entire Elanor situation.  At least I know why she kept shoving candy at me all day.  I developed a rather annoying BLUE rash the day after I first came to Hogwarts.  I went down the the infirmary and Madame Pomfrey tsk’d at me several times, applied some stinky salve and put me in one of the beds. At least I was able to Accio my knitting so I had something to do.  It took three days for the rash to go away.  This is going to be a very long year.

At least my dragon eggs are doing well.  They are already starting to hatch.  I’m so pleased.

I was released from the infirmary on Friday just in time to join the other students in the common room for a smallish get together.  Elanor wasn’t there so I didn’t have to be worried about being fed anymore of the rashberry candy.  We had a lovely time, we snuck to our tower and ‘decorated’ the boys dorm for them.  I don’t know where they were, since none of them were in their rooms or at the party.  I used a spell I learned at Beaux Batons, even taught it to a couple of the other girls.  It’s a rather fun spell and causes a type of string to fly out of your wand and drape around the room.  Some of the other girls became very proficient at the spell.  Since there was no one around to teach the spell that removes the string I don’t know how if was cleaned up.  I suppose the poor little house elfs had to take care of it.

It was a nice quiet weekend.  I spent it quietly in the library catching up with the work I was given by my teachers and browsing the shelves.  I certainly love books!

Here is my homework from the time I was in the infirmary:

  1. Do you knit and/or crochet – Yes, both
  2. How long have you been at your craft? – My mother first taught me to knit when I was young – so decades
  3. Do you spin? – yes
  4. What type of spinning do you do (drop spindle or wheel)? I have spindles and use them occassionally.  But I prefer my wheel and do most of my spinning on it.
  5. Are there any other crafts that you participate in? – Many and varied
  6. What are your favorite yarns/fibers? I am a wool-aholic. I prefer simple utilitarian yarns.
  7. What are your LEAST favorite yarns/fibers? Fun fur and other ‘novelty’ yarns.
  8. Are there any types/brands of yarn that you are dying to work with but haven’t gotten a chance? Dream in Color – the colors are very nice and it seems like a good, quality yarn
  9. What are your favorite types of projects to knit/crochet? sweaters and socks. I usually only crochet baby blankets and dishcloths
  10. What are you currently working on? I have sweaters that I’m making for gifts
  11. Anything you plan to start this autumn? more gifts
  12. What is your favorite Finished Object? (Please, post a picture if you would like.) I love anything that is finished – because it is FINISHED.
  13. Are their any knitting/crochet techniques that you would like to learn? I am currently learning Portuguese knitting.  Once I get a little more proficient I intent to learn to do two color knitting using the technique.

First day of school

September 10, 2008 at 11:01 pm (Uncategorized)

Papa has asked that I write my journal in English to improve my skill.  I will try but I make no promises. I should like to find a spell to translate if all for me.  C’est plus facile.

I arrived at Hogwarts on mardi.  I was introduced to my new teachers and the house where I have been placed. Elanor Cadogan, the house Prefect, helped me find my way around and gave me a tour of the school.  She was very kind and seemed to have endless pockets full of sweets.

I took a large number of tests, for placement in my classes.  Some of the tests were embarassingly easy.  What do they think is taught at Beaux Batons?  I absolutely refused to sit the test for Divination.  Tarot is enough to know in that area and I learned that from Maman. I hope that the classes will be more challenging.  It will be hard enough to be away from all my friends without having my intellegence insulted by simple classes.  Surely the students I have met in Slytherin are the norm and not the exception.  They all seem intellegent enough to enjoy a challenging course of study.

Dumbledore seems nice, he reminds me of Grandpere.  Hopefully he will not suffer an unfortunate accident like Grandpere. I thought it was wisest to not ask him if he liked to experiment with spells.

The Greenhouses are lovely.  The air is heavy with the fragrance of flowers and rich earth.

The Library seems quite intriguing.  If Papa wouldn’t be si desolait I might ask to stay at school over the holidays so that I could just read the books.

Mlle Cadogan took me to the kitchens for an afternoon snack.  The smells were very nice and the house elves very solicitous. They could use a few more types of cheese but the food is certainly better than my Grandmother Black serves.  I doubt there will be Chausson au chocolat for breakfast in the morning, they are my very favorite.  But there will be other delights. New things to eat.

The Care of Magical Creatures professor gave me three dragon eggs to care for, as my test.  I hope they don’t die.  It is very hard to keep dragons, at least until they are done growing. They seem to die easily.

Hello!

September 7, 2008 at 12:16 am (Uncategorized)

New schools are always scary.  Papa gave me this little journal to write about my new school.  He says he can read it so he will be able to peek in on me and see how I am doing.  Maybe If I’m doing really poorly he’ll let me go back to Beaux Batons.

I promised to give it an honest try – but I’m going to miss all my friends. And there is this business of a Sorting Ceremony, which I don’t get to do.  Papa has arranged for me to join his old house. I don’t know much about how that all works.  I guess it will be fine.  Right?
